Gilbert’s vision was for the story to have a comedic tone and felt that Schafer and Grossman’s personalities were perfect fit for the game. In order to flush out the story and characters, Gilbert brought Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman onto the project as writers. After reading “On Stranger Tides” Gilbert decided to add paranormal themes to the game’s plot and influenced the characters Guybrush and LeChuck. While the game’s world was influenced by Pirates of the Caribbean the characters and tone were inspired by Tim Powers’ historical fantasy novel “On Stranger Tides”. The game’s ambiance was inspired by Gilbert’s favorite childhood amusement park ride, Pirate of the Caribbean. Development of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure” wrapped up in 1989 freeing up the team to start working on Gilbert’s concept known internally under the working title Mutiny on Monkey Island. Gilbert’s proposal was warmly received by Lucasfilm Games however production of the game would have to be placed on hold as plans to create “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure” were already made and the designers including Gilbert where required on the title.

The three trials entailed winning a sword duel against the island’s resident sword master, finding a buried treasure, and stealing a valuable idol from the governor’s mansion. With his desire to become a pirate he seeks out the island’s pirate leader who tells him he must complete three trials to become a pirate. The game follows a young man named Guybrush Threepwood who travels to Mêlée Island to become a pirate. All in all a great game and, considering how much time has passed since its original release, it’s still entertaining and fresh.The Secret of Monkey Island is a graphic adventure video game developed and published by Lucasfilm Games. This is well thought out in the sense that it will try to point you in the right direction without completely solving the puzzle for you. Even so, I only felt the need to use the hint system once. Regarding the puzzles, most make sense considering the cartoony logic of the game’s universe, but there are still a few of them which feel a little too cryptic. Luckily, you can just switch to the old graphics, interface and music just by pressing a button, but it would be nice if you could customize each of these aspects to what best suits you. It’s even worse when you need to combine items inside your inventory. It’s nice that the graphics can take up the whole screen now, but using the scroll wheel to go through the different verbs that were once all available on the main screen felt clumsy. I felt the new interface was worse than the original too. Character designs are good but the animation is very stiff, to the point where one could argue this remaster could use its own remaster. Which is lucky because the remastered graphics are a bit lackluster.
The VAs are a great fit for their roles and their delivery really brings the characters to life. The soundtrack is great, and arguably the best aspect of the remastered version along with the voice acting. It has charismatic characters, witty comedy and clever puzzles. This game is a staple of its genre and for good reason.
